History
The San Diego High School Foundation, Inc. was founded in July of 1992 by a group of interested alumni. The charter board members included two former San Diego City Schools principals--Dick Jackson '45, and Herb Ibarra, alumnus and former principal of SDHS. It cooperated closely with then-principal Robert Amparan.
Current Focus
During the past two years, the Foundation has worked to restore the music program to some of its
former glory, supporting the department with more than $20,000 in the past three years.
The School of Science and Technology has received nearly as much as the School of Arts. In
order to put the science department into the same class as the high scoring high schools in San
Diego County, an estimated $1,000,000 is needed over the next two or three years. SDHS is
the magnet school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
Mission
Under its articles of incorporation and bylaws, the founding trustees chose to support the following goals: promote academic excellence; increase graduation rates; improve employability of SDHS graduates; support enrichment activities in underfunded areas; and help maintain a safe environment for learning at SDHS.
Cooperation with Hoover High School
The Caver-Cardinal Golf Tournament, initiated ten years ago and currently chaired by Kathy Hubbard Curran, Class of 1950, has raised more than $130,000, split evenly between the two school foundations. Paul Hartley, past president of the Hoover Foundation, helped SDHS trustees in recruiting their initial board and developing a Mentor Program. Daryl Emerick Ferguson has assisted the Hoover Foundation with advice and information on several occasions.
Foundation Recognition by the IRS
The SDHS Foundation received its permanent designation as a 501(c)(3) organization and can offer tax deductibility to its donors up to the full extent of the law.
Current Leadership
The Foundation board is led by President Bill Fiss, Class of 1959, and has expanded its membership to include three members of the Class of 1981. The
board reflects the diversity of the school and its trustees are dedicated to "leveling the playing field" for under-represented students.
Scholarship Endowments
Scholarship endowments have grown apace. 2001 saw two new endowments of $100,000 each to
provide scholarship awards for outstanding students in math/science and in wrestling. One
endowment was a bequest and the other was a gift from Burr C. Passenheim of the Class of
l959. Others go to outstanding students in journalism, art, music, drama, and
math. Alumnus Norman G. Levi awards a $2,500 scholarship to a student from each of the six
Schools, and John Harris sponsors the Jeanne B. Campbell Award (full tuition and books for a
female student to attend SDSU). The Mahoney-Yellowtail-Sanger Diversity in Nursing Award
was contributed by Susan Johnson. The Alumni Association makes a number of awards in
creative writing.
New scholarship awards for 2008-2009 include the USS Midway "Bravo Zulu" scholarships and the
CIMA "First In My Family" awards. The Foundation would like to thank our generous donors
and congratulate the 2007 scholarship recipients.
